Healthcare is something every family thinks about , especially when you live in a growing community like ours. For many of us in Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Clearview Township, and the Blue Mountains, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) has long been a trusted place for emergency care, diagnostics, surgeries, and support through life’s biggest moments.
Over the past few years, CGMH has been making big strides to meet the healthcare needs of our rapidly growing region. Thanks to significant support from the Ontario government, local donors, and the CGMH Foundation, we are now seeing major improvements that will benefit families, seniors, workers, and anyone who calls this area home.
One of the most exciting developments is the arrival of the hospital’s first-ever MRI machine right here in the South Georgian Bay region. For the first time, patients no longer need to travel outside the area for advanced diagnostic imaging like MRI scans, something thousands of residents previously had to do. With this new technology, CGMH expects to perform around 5,500 scans annually, reducing wait times and helping doctors diagnose conditions faster and more accurately.
This new MRI suite was made possible by a combination of Ontario government funding and more than $5 million raised locally, which shows just how much this community values our hospital and the care it provides. Patients have already reported being able to get appointments months earlier than they expected, without the added stress of travelling out of town.
In addition to the MRI, the Ontario government recently announced over $1 million in funding through health infrastructure programs to support continued upgrades at CGMH. This investment helps modernize critical systems like facility infrastructure, security, emergency generators, and other essential components that keep the hospital running safely and efficiently.
Beyond these improvements, even larger investments are underway as part of provincial plans to build a new expanded hospital for the South Georgian Bay region. These future plans include substantial funding to increase inpatient capacity, modernize facilities, and bring more advanced services closer to home for families and seniors alike.
From a family perspective, having accessible, high-quality healthcare nearby gives peace of mind. Whether it’s getting urgent care for a sick child, seeing a specialist for ongoing treatment, or having advanced diagnostics like MRI scans available locally, these improvements matter. They make this region not just a beautiful place to live, but a safe and supportive community to raise a family.
And from a real estate perspective, strong local healthcare infrastructure is a draw for buyers. People relocating from bigger cities often ask about access to top-notch medical services, especially as they think about long-term plans like growing families or aging parents. Investments in healthcare not only improve quality of life but also reinforce confidence in the region’s growth and stability.
Collingwood General and Marine Hospital has served this community for generations, and these latest milestones, provincial funding, infrastructure upgrades, and the new MRI, show that it’s evolving right alongside us.
If you have questions about how these investments impact local quality of life or even real estate demand, feel free to reach out. Living and working here, I’m proud to see such strong support for the health and future of our community.
